茨城県と千葉県の県境は利根川であると思ってまず間違いないのだが、茨城県取手市の小堀地区は大正時代に流れが変えられた時のままのため、今でも川向こうの取手市の飛び地になっていて、渡し船が活躍している。
渡し船と云えば「矢切の渡し」だが、こちら（小堀の渡し）は観光目的では無いため、エンジンの付いた舟で地元民優先である。学校の登下校時間帯は結構混むらしい。
